Over the past year and a half, we explored what’s important for the future of the UBC Vancouver campus and how land use planning can help to get us there. The result is an ambitious, long-range plan for how the campus will change and grow to support the needs of the university, its students, faculty, residents and staff, and Musqueam.
The Campus Vision 2050 process includes updates to two key policies—UBC’s Land Use Plan (LUP) and the Housing Action Plan (HAP)—as well as the creation of the Vision itself. The LUP regulates campus development on both academic and neighbourhood lands and is adopted by the Government of British Columbia. The HAP is a UBC Board of Governors-approved policy to improve housing choice and affordability for students, faculty and staff.
Community engagement on the Vision, LUP and HAPhas concluded until a legislatively required public hearing focused on the LUP is scheduled and held.Meanwhile, engagement with Musqueam continues, in alignment with completion of a new Relationship Agreement being developed between Musqueam and UBC.
Community input over the past 18 months of this process—with over 13,000 touchpoints with the community—has been critical to shaping the outcomes. The three draft documents—the Vision, LUP and HAP—are being updated to reflect input from engagement.
Next Steps
Over the summer, engagementwill continue with Musqueam. The next update for the UBC Board of Governors on the Campus Vision 2050 process will be in the fall, ahead of a legislatively-required public hearing on the LUP.More information about the LUP will be shared later in the fall.
Campus + Community Planning Staff will also host pop-ups and walking tours this summer to connect with the campus community. More information including dates and registration links for the walking tours will be made available soon.
